Our social research guides all our work and campaigns. It helps us influence government, business and employers, and raise awareness of the issues facing people with deafness, tinnitus and hearing loss.
Our Hearing Matters report presents the latest evidence on the impact of deafness and hearing loss on millions of people across the UK. The agenda set by Hearing Matters informs all the work we do.
The report sets out what actions need to be taken to tackle deafness, tinnitus and hearing loss across three areas:
- support and care
- technology and treatments
It contains important recommendations for:
- reducing service gaps
- increasing investment in hearing research
- improving the accessibility of health, social care, education, employment and entertainment.
Our social research
We regularly carry out research to understand more about the life experience of people who are Deaf, have hearing loss and tinnitus. This helps us develop our policy positions in health and social care, employment and broadcasting and telecommunications.
We also respond to consultations and government inquiries to make sure legislation, regulations and national guidance take people’s needs into account.
Key social research projects
- As part of our Working for Change campaign we commissioned the opinion poll company YouGov to survey business leaders. We also interviewed people in business to identify good practice that can be replicated across the country.
- Our Managing Hearing Loss when Seeking or in Employment report tested out different approaches to delivering lipreading support to people with hearing loss. We surveyed people with hearing loss to find out how they would like to receive support and the best way to deliver it outside of working hours.
- Over 1,450 people who completed our Speak Easy survey told us that background noise is a huge problem for them when they are eating out. We produced a guide outlining steps cafés, bars and restaurants can take to reduce background noise and be fully accessible for people with hearing loss.
